Ourika Valley includes a large part of the High Atlas (Morocco), with its highest peak, Mount Toubkal (4,167m). It is the better accessible area of the Atlas and corresponds to the Adrar n’Dern mountains. It is located in the Western High Atlas, between the valleys of N’Fiss (West) and Ourika (East). This area is 100,000ha, from which 38,000ha are the central region. The peripheral zone has 62,000ha.
This beautiful mountains offer the highest peaks in North Africa. The main ones are Tazaghart (3,843m) Ouanoukrim (4,088m), Toubkal (4,167m), Tichki (3,753m), the Azrou n Tamadot (3,664m), the Aksoual (3,842m), the Bou Iguenouane (3.882m) and the Ineghmar (3,892m). Numerous rivers are born in the park area, ensuring irrigation of the lower valleys of the mountains. The main ones are the N’Fiss, the Rherhaya or Rhirhaia, Ourika and the Souss.
This valley is the sole location within the High Atlas Range where the endangered primate Barbary Macaque, Macaca sylvanus is known to occur; this primate is found in the Middle Atlas and in a few disjunctive populations in Algeria and Gibraltar.
Ourika Valley, due to its many waterfalls and several attractions, is a very popular day-trip destination from Marrakech. The region is inhabited by Berber people who practice a traditional way of life. Despite its proximity to Marrakech, it is still considered relatively “unspoiled”. One is astonished by the hard labour undertaken by the Berber populations of the area which did not hesitate to hoist with hillside materials necessary to the construction of small houses fixed on mountainside or to work the terraces necessary to agriculture in hostile environment.
